the Central Concern

“The central concern is what we must do today to live faithfully.” from The Servant Church by Elford & Corbett

New Light: This is the query I need to come back to the present moment in times of slacking or stress. “What must I do today to live faithfully?”

Experience: Salvation in categories of belief & unbelief are abstract conjuring. The central concern cuts through the bullshit of all our spiritual pride.

Tangent: Spiritual pride can appear in many ways. The conceit that we are going to heaven while others languish in hell is one of its forms. But there are other vanities by which spiritual pride may be known. As Quakers, we may be frightened to see the history of spiritual pride in our own community.

I’m no stranger to spiritual pride. I draw inspiration from the words of Quaker Jim Corbett: “The central concern is what we must do today to live faithfully.”
